The Pilates method was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates who set up the first Pilates studio in New York City in the mid -1920s after arriving from Germany. The exercises on the equipment and on the mat are designed to condition the entire body using different kinds of positions to improve functional movements. The importance of controlling a movement from the beginning of an exercise until the end was one of Joseph Pilates main principles. His approach was to concentrate on the intrinsic muscle groups to stabilize the whole body. The Pilates method is a safe exercise program that strengthens and stretches all major muscle groups and also incorporates the smaller weaker muscles to create a more balanced body. |
